There`s a story about Napoleon Bonaparte walking in a Jewish town on the night of Tisha B'Av. The streets are empty, and only in one house did he see a faint light.
It was a synagogue. He came in and saw the Jews sitting on the floor lamenting and mourning.
He asked: What are you mourning for? And they answered him: For the destruction of the temple. "And how long ago did that happen?"
"More than 2000 years ago" ...
Napoleon marveled and answered: Only people who can cry like that about an event from 2000 years ago can survive 2000 years.
The first Prime Minister of the State of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, also used similar words: A nation without a past is a nation without a future.
Today, Tisha B'Av, is a day of fasting and mourning. Mourning for the destruction of the two temples - the first temple built by Solomon and destroyed by the Babylonians, and the second temple destroyed in 70 ac. by the Romans, as they exiled the Jews from their land.
But today, I go out on the porch of my house overlooking Jerusalem and see the lights of the rebuilt Jerusalem. We are in the midst of redemption - the people of Israel returned to their land. In the establishment of the state there were only 600,000 Jews and today 7 million Jews came here from all over the world. A real miracle, that in seventy years a small country grew and developed in so many areas and the land is green and bearing fruit. Why are we still mourning?
The mourning for the destruction is not only for the physical temple, but for all the reasons that led to the destruction, and we strive to amend them - repairing the world, bring justice, love, and connection within the people of Israel and among the nations. And only when the reality is more complete, will this also be expressed in the building of the Temple.
This year after many years of deliberation, I decided to ascend the Temple Mount. Deliberating, because it is difficult for me to see a mosque (beautiful and impressive!) In the place where the temple was destroyed. It is difficult for me that today Jews are not allowed to pray on the Temple Mount and they can only reach the Western Wall freely - an exterior remnant of the Temple courtyard.
But I have decided that all year long I feel the joy of the redemption and rebuilding of Zion - and I want to feel also what is missing, the reasons for our mourning.

Gate of Mercy
Opposite the Mount of Olives, east of the Temple Mount, there is one gate in the wall that leads directly to the Temple Mount - the Gate of Mercy. All the gates of Jerusalem are open, and the Gate of Mercy is closed, waiting for the time of redemption.
The six gates represent the six days of action and the seventh gate of mercy represents the Sabbath. The gate of mercy awaits the time of eternal Sabbath and rest, the day of redemption, and through this gate, the Messiah is to pass on his way to the Temple Mount.
This is my favorite picture of Jerusalem, and as it hangs before my eyes, I remember Jerusalem in its glory and construction and look forward to a world of complete redemption. I believe that the key is in our hands, and our actions can bring closer the day of opening that gate.
After Tisha B'Av, the "Days of Comfort" begin.
" Comfort, comfort my people, said God. Speak to the heart of Jerusalem and call to her ..." says the Prophet Isaiah.

תשעה באב - על מה אנחנו מתאבלים? מספרים על נפוליאון בונפרטה שהלך בעיירה יהודית בליל תשעה באב, הרחובות ריקים, ורק בבניין אחד ראה אור חלש. היה זה בית כנסת. הוא נכנס וראה את היהודים יושבים על הרצפה מקוננים ואבלים, שאל: על מה אתם מתאבלים? וענו לו: על חורבן בית המקדש. "ולפני כמה זמן זה קרה?" ענו לו: לפני יותר מ2000 שנה... נפוליאון התפעל וענה: רק עם שיכול לבכות כך על מאורע מחפני 2000 שנה יכול לשרוד 2000 שנה גם ראש הממשלה הראשון של מדינת ישראל דוד בן גוריון השתמש במילים דומות: דוד בן גוריון אמר פעם שעם ללא עבר הוא עם ללא עתיד. היום, יום תשעה באב, הוא יום צום ואבל. אבלים על חורבן שני בתי המקדש- בית המקדש הראשון שבנה שלמה ונחרב בידי הבבלים, ובית המקדש השני שנחרב בשנת 70 על ידי הרומאים , ולווה בטבח ובגלות.
אך היום, אני יוצאת למרפסת ביתי המשקיפה על ירושלים ורואה את אורותיה של ירושלים הבנויה, אנחנו בעיצומה של גאולה שנראית לעין - עם ישראל השב לארצו, כשבהקמת המדינה היו רק 600 אלף יהודים והיום כבר 7 מליון יהודים שהגיעו לכאן מכל קצוות העולם, ארץ ישראל פורחת, נס ממש שבשבעים שנה מדינה קטנה צומחת ומתפתחת בכל כך הרבה תחומים , הארץ ירוקה ונותנת פירותיה, למה אנחנו עדיין אבלים?
האבל על החורבן הוא לא רק על הבית הפיזי, אלא על כל הסיבות שהביאו לחורבן, ולתיקונן אנו שואפים- תיקון עולם, צדק, משפט, אהבה וחיבור בתוך עם ישראל ובין העמים. ורק כאשר המציאות תהיה שלמה יותר, יתבטא הדבר גם בבניין בית המקדש שיבטא מציאות זו.
השנה אחרי הרבה שנים של התלבטות, החלטתי לעלות להר הבית, התלבטתי כי קשה לי לראות מסגד (יפהפה ומרשים!) במקום שבו נחרב בית המקדש. קשה לי שהיום אסור ליהודים להתפלל על הר הבית והם יכולים להגיע בחופשיות רק לכותל המערבי- שריד חיצוני לחצר בית המקדש.
אבל החלטתי שכל השנה אני מרגישה את השמחה על הגאולה והבנייה המחודשת של ציון – ואני רוצה להרגיש גם את מה שחסר, את מה שאיננו, ועליו אנו עדיין מתאבלים.

שער הרחמים
ממול הר הזיתים , ממזרח להר הבית, יש שער אחד בחומה מוביל ישירות להר הבית – שער הרחמים. כל שערי ירושלים פתוחים, ושער הרחמים סגור, מחכה ומצפה לזמן הגאולה.
המסורת היהודיתקושרת שער זה לעתיד לבוא, ששת השערים כנגד ששת ימי המעשה ושער הרחמים השביעי כנגד יום השבת, ומצפה שער הרחמים ליום שכולו שבת ומנוחה, יום הגאולה, ודרכו אמור לעבור המשיח בדרכו להר הבית.
זוהי תמונת ירושלים האהובה עליי, וכשהיא תלויה מול עיניי אני זוכרת את ירושלים בתפארתה ובבניינה, ומצפה לתיקון עולם וגאולה שלמה. מאמינה שהמפתח בידיים שלנו, ובמעשינו יכולים לקרב את היום שהשער ייפתח.
אחרי תשעה באב מתחילים "ימי הנחמה" . "נחמו נחמו עמי יאמר אלהיכם דברו על לב ירושלים וקראו אליה.." אומר הנביא ישעיהו.
